Cotto ranked ahead of Golovkin in the latest rankings

Miguel Cotto stays ahead of Gennady Golovkin in latest ring rankings

So, the Ring Magazine ratings are out and there seems to be a bit of controversy in the middleweight division.  Ring Magazine currently has Miguel Cotto as their champion and Gennady Glolovkin (GGG) rated below him.  Miguel Cotto has not fought since June of last year, when he beat Sergio Martinez for the title.  He has not defended his belt.  GGG has been fairly active over the past year and has made title defenses.

Cotto's only fight at middleweight came against Sergio Martinez, who was coming off of a 14 month layoff.  Martinez had also had two knee surgeries, which was definitely apparent during the fight.  The WBC has now made Golovkin the mandatory challenger for Cotto's middleweight belt.  It should be interesting to see what Cotto's next move brings.

Here are the top 10 middleweights, according to Ring Magazine:

Champion - Miguel Cotto
1. Gennady Golovkin
2. Peter Quillin
3. Sergio Martinez
4. Daniel Geale
5. Hassan N'Dam
6. Andy Lee
7. Martin Murray
8. Jermain Taylor
9. Billy Joe Saunders
10. Daniel Jacobs

Let's take a look at this list.  Number 3 is Sergio Martinez, who has fought one time in almost two years.  Yes, he's ranked third.  Jermain Taylor, who is now in big trouble with the law after firing a pistol in a crowded festival because there was no candy, sits at number 8.  Daniel Geale, who was brutalized by Gennady Golovkin is ranked 4.  And of course, Miguel Cotto, who has had one fight at middle sits atop of the pile as champion.
