Burton vs. Buglioni – Post Fight

Frank Buglioni stunningly came from behind to knock out Hosea Burton in the 12th round to win the Lonsdale Belt at light heavyweight.

Things started off ominously for the ‘Wise Guy’ as Burton’s use of the jab to control range and set up the powerful back hand won him the opening session comfortably. Buglioni had a better 2nd as he went hunting for the champion’s body but Burton answered with a couple of right hands of his own in a 3 minutes where both men had success. The 3rd followed a similar pattern.

The next round was predominantly fought at long range which allowed Burton to get his right hand off to both head and body to win the round. Burton then connected with the crisper shots in the 5th, however a late onslaught from Buglioni proved that he could get to still get to his opponent.

Burton continued to land with the cleaner work in the 6th as a nasty cut opened above the challengers left eye.  Following a doctor’s inspection on the cut at the end of the round, Buglioni upped the tempo in fear of the wound scuppering his dreams.

Following an even 8th, Burton seemed to wrestle back control in the 9th and 10th with huge right hands to snap Buglioni’s head back on several occasions.

As the fight entered the championship rounds the general feeling at ringside was that Buglioni needed a knockdown to bring things back on the scorecard. Burton started the 11th very sharply with the jab. However, with a minute and half left of the round, Buglioni found something within him to produce a relentless onslaught which eventually saw Burton slump to the floor. With only seconds remaining following the referees count, Burton survived the round.

Buglioni sensed the breakthrough and continued to pour the pressure on in the last. Despite eating a sharp uppercut on the way in, Buglioni found a huge right hand to drop Burton with only a minute left of the fight. Whilst the champion beat the initial count, his head and legs had not recovered and Buglioni stormed in to end the contest.

In a classic dust up for the British title, both men produced a tremendous display with a rematch a
viable option next.
