Kal Yafai produced a dominant display to become WBA super-flyweight world champion after outpointing former 2 time king Luis Concepcion at the Manchester Arena. The three judges at ringside scored the fight 120-108, 119-108 and 117-110. Upon victory, Yafai made history by becoming the first world champion Britain has produced at the weight and the first from Birmingham.
Concepcion, who had lost his title on the scales the day before never got into the contest as Yafai got straight down to business from the first bell, sinking in hurtful body shots at will.
The former Beijing Olympian’s dominance continued as the rounds went on, throwing a 3 punch combination in the 3rd, a short left uppercut in the 4th and a solid left hook in the 5th which all rocked the former champions head back.
Yafai’s greater speed was illustrated in the 10th as he sent Concepcion to the canvas with a short left hook in what was a punch perfect display.
At the final bell, there was no doubt who the victor was as Kal Yafai fulfilled his destiny to become world champion in his 21st outing.
