Miguel Cotto says that Canelo Alvarez made "a smart move," by relinquishing the WBC belt rather than face Gennady Golovkin.
Cotto is still not happy about paying Golovkin $800,000 for a step aside fee so that he could fight Canelo Alvarez. On top of that, he had to pay a $300,000 sanctioning fee to defend the title. Yeah, well, Cotto thought that was ridiculous too and he told the WBC to go fish. "Greed has destroyed our sport," Cotto stated to El Vocero.
So, what's next for Cotto? In usual Cotto fashion - he's in no hurry. He wants to drop back down to 154. Canelo and Juan Manuel Marquez are definitely possibilities for him later this year.
