It's time for the main event tonight. Jean Pascal vs. Sergey Kovalev.
Very interesting in this fight that Jean Pascal is being trained by legendary fighter Roy Jones Jr. Jones Jr. is acting as chief second in the Pascal corner. From the start, Kovalev looks a lot bigger than Pascal. Kovalev definitely the aggressor stalking Pascal and throwing jabs. Pascal was knocked down at the end of the third round by a monster right hand. The shot knocked Pascal onto the middle rope and he's lucky he didn't fall out of the ring. Both men rocked the other with shots that round, but still a Kovalev round. Kovalev is really neutralizing the speed of Pascal with power and technique.
Kovalev seemed to be having his way until a counter right hand in the 4th round really got his attention. Both men having success in round 4, Pascal is tired and hurt, but still game and landing big shots. Granite chins are being shown by both men. Amazing fifth round for Pascal. He landed a huge body shot that folded Kovalev and plenty of counter shots. Kovalev is getting caught more and more and looks like he's being hurt by these shots. Kovalev looked very disappointed that he couldn't get a knockout early in this fight and it may be coming back to haunt him. More of the same in the 6th with both men landing big shots and hurting the other. Pascal landed some big shots at the end of the round, but I think Kovalev did enough to win the round overall. I will say that Kovalev is being hit with some monster counters from Pascal.
The 7th round belonged to Kovalev as he went back to boxing and using his jab very effectively. When he uses the jab and boxes, Pascal has a harder time with the counters. When Kovalev rushes and tries for the hard shots, Pascal is catching him. Pascal was knocked down in the 8th round and the end came with a big right hand and the referee stepped in to stop the fight at 1:59 of the 8th round. May have been a quick stoppage, but I think it was a good stop.
