Erislandy Lara's name is heating up in the Miguel Cotto sweepstakes. Timothy Bradley, Floyd Mayweather, and now Erislandy Lara are the names being tossed around for the current middleweight kingpin. Obviously, if Mayweather doesn't fight Pacman, Cotto may be a good plan b. He holds a middleweight belt and that could be very attractive to a fighter who likes to refer to himself as the best ever. That leaves the other two - Bradley and Lara. Bradley has to come up 13 pounds, in what can only be called a mismatch. Lara, on the other hand, will come up 6 pounds and would be a very difficult fight for Cotto. Honestly, I'm surprised his management would entertain this matchup.
Lara's manager, Luis De Cuba Jr., spoke with ESPN Deportes recently that they are awaiting word from Al Haymon, Lara's advisor. "Lara was waiting to fight in April or May. What we’re working on now is the biggest fight, that is Cotto."
I have to tell you, I give Cotto a lot of respect if he takes this fight. This is not an easy fight for him by a long shot.
