Pacquiao will not compete in Rio Olympics

According to Spin.ph, the Amateur Boxing Alliances of the Philippines was informed that eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao has officially ruled out the possibility of fighting in the Rio Olympic Games.

Pacquiao is reportedly going to focus all of his energy on 'legislative work' as a senator, according to ABAP executive director Ed Picson.

Picson was informed by Pacquiao's media officer Aquiles Zonio that the newly elected senator was not going to pursue the opportunity to go for the Philippines' first Olympic gold medal.

"Just got word from Aquiles Zonio that MP (Pacquiao) has decided to 'prioritize his legislative duties,'" said Picson in a statement.

AIBA, who govern the amateur boxing system, is pressing to involve professional fighters in the Olympics. They are looking to make rule changes which would open the door for pros to enter the Olympics and fight top amateurs.

The organization invited several top pros. Most of them are against the rule change and feel professionals have no business fighting amateurs - especially now that amateurs are no longer going to wear head gear. Others like Pacquiao, Amir Khan and Wladimir Klitschko expressed interest in going for Olympic gold.

Pacquiao retired from the sport last month after winning a trilogy fight with Timothy Bradley. He recently secured a senatorial seat in the Philippines and plans to focus his energy on expanding his political career, although there are still rumors that he might return to fight again in the next twelve months.
