'Canelo': Trial expected to last 2-3 weeks after five year delay

Charges were filed in early 2011 by All-Star Boxing promoter Felix 'Tutico' Zabala Jr. against Golden Boy Promotions for allegedly stealing Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez from them in 2009. All -Star is seeking millions of dollars in damages and after five years of delays will finally see their day in court.

Zabala claims that All-Star invested over $180,000 in Alvarez and had signed the boxer to a legally binding contract in 2008 at age 18. Alvarez boxed under All-Star for a total of nine fights over 13 months. Golden Boy firmly denies these allegations.

Zabala, Alvarez, Golden Boy Vice President Eric Gomez, Alvarez manager Jose 'Chepo' Reynoso, and Alvarez trainer Eddie Reynoso were all present in Miami, Dade County circuit court for jury selection Monday, May 22, 2016.
The Honorable Judge Migna Sanchez Llorens and selected jury members will decide to the integrity of the said contract between Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and All-Star Boxing. Notably, if the contract with All -Star is proved to be legitimate, the contract the boxer has with Golden Boy will be considered null and void which may lead to Alvarez being a free agent.
