Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has revealed that he suffered an injury to his left heel and he'll be unable to move forward with a tentative fight against WBC super middleweight champion Badou Jack on April 30th.
Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the World Boxing Council, has reached out to get a status on the negotiations from Jack and his representatives, because he's not made a defense for six months.
Jack's last defense took place in September when he defeated his mandatory challenger George Groves at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
According to Chavez, he sprained his left heel and had it evaluated by a doctor. He was told not to train for at least three weeks. There is no word on whether or not they plan to postpone the fight to a later date or if Jack will proceed in a different direction.
"We knew they had an agreement to fight in late April, but there has been a lot of controversy over the statements made by the father (Julio Cesar Chavez Sr.), but that is a matter between father and son. As for the sport, we sent a letter to Jack and his team because it's almost been six months since his last defense and we have to get notification on what he plans to do for his next fight," Sulaiman said to ESPN Deportes.
Chavez Jr. feels confident the fight will be pushed back to a date in May or even June. He's been inactive since last July's decision win over Marcos Reyes in Texas. During that fight Chavez injured his hand and the injury kept him out of the ring for the remainder of the year.
"I'm almost certain that there is an agreement. I just asked for the fight to be postponed three weeks because of the heel, but I hope to return to training very soon," Chavez Jr. said.
