It seems that Cotto's advisor, Gaby Penagaricano, doesn't have much faith in his fighter these days. Fresh after his win against Martin Murray, Gennady Golovkin called out Miguel Cotto. This would be an incredible fight and big money fight for both fighters. "Everybody likes to call out the big names!” Penagaricano said via RingTV.com. “But of course it is possible for the future. We’ll see down the road." Translation - We're never fighting him.
“Cotto has no opponent for his next fight,” Abel Sanchez told RingTV.com. “New York would be great this summer for a showdown for the WBC belt, and to see who is the best middleweight in the world.” Translation - They're hoping Penagaricano gets it together.
It turns out rumors for Cotto's next opponent is either Tim Bradley or Brandon Rios. That's right - both moving up two weight classes to middleweight. Brandon Rios had a good outing against Mike Alvarado, but everyone knows Alvarado was a shot fighter and Rios isn't that far behind. As far as Tim Bradley, he is coming off of a one sided loss to Manny Pacquiao and a draw to Diego Chaves.
This is not ok. Cotto is the middleweight champion of the world and is content to be matched with welterweights. I think we now know why he pulled out of the Canelo Alvarez fight. His handlers don't think he can win. Gaby Penagaricano is the type of advisor that is horrible for the sport. The bottom line is that if Miguel Cotto can't compete against the top fighters in his division, he should retire or move down.
