Next opponent for Cotto to be named in a few days
ESPN Deportes is reporting that there are 5 potential opponents on the list for Miguel Cotto, although none of them carry the type of money he would have received for fighting Canelo Alvarez. The names are Tim Bradley, Amir Kahn, Erislandy Lara, Brandon Rios, Cornelius Bundrage.
Cotto's manager, Gaby Penagaricano, gave an interview to ESPN Deportes. In classic Penagaricano form, he said absolutely nothing. "No nothing is set in stone, although we are specifically working on Miguel’s next fight.… I’d rather keep it confidential,[potential opponents]but there are several names in the mix, we will announce it soon. Possibly by the end a February or a few days afterward.” stated Penagaricano.
My guess is that they will take Tim Bradley, who is the biggest name on the list and doesn't pose that much of a threat because he's coming up from welterweight. Erislandy Lara is a horrible matchup for Cotto. I would see that fight going much of the way the Austin Trout fight went for Cotto. Brandon Rios is probably the safest name on the list because he's coming off a nice win of Mike Alvarado. The caveat to that is that Alvarado is a shot fighter and Rios isn't far behind. Cornelius Bundrage is interesting, but not that big of a name. I would definitely give Cotto the edge in that fight. It looks as though Eddie Hearn is trying to line up Amir Kahn with Kell Brook in June, but a fight with Cotto would be a much bigger feature. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
