Top Rank goes PPV after being turned down by HBO

Top Rank has put together a fight card for April 22.  The main event will feature WBO Featherweight Champion Oscar Valdez.  He will take on Miguel Marriaga.  Gilberto Ramirez and Jessie Magdelano are also on the undercard.  This will also feature the debut of Olympic Silver Medalist Shakur Stevenson.

This sounds like a great HBO Boxing After Dark card.  The problem is that it's not going to be on HBO.  The problem is that it will be on Top Rank PPV.  That's right, you will have to pay to see this fight card.

Bob Arum talked with Boxing Scene about the fight card, “I think it’s a terrific card.  It’ll do decent pay-per-view business and it’ll sell out at the gate [at StubHub Center]. Would I prefer for these guys to fight on free television? Yeah. But, you know, it is what it is. The alternative is for them to sit on their asses while I wait for somebody making a handout.”

“I don’t wanna talk about HBO,” stated Arum. “I’m saying that it is not my first choice to ever do pay-per-view except for a big, big match. But I have to do it from time to time because I have no alternative.”

The Top Rank PPV will be on April 22, which is the same day that Shawn Porter takes on Andre Berto on Showtime Championship Boxing from the Brooklyn Barclay’s Center.

Overall, this is a good card, but clearly not a PPV caliber card.  The fights are decent matchups, but are more geared toward an HBO Championship Boxing or Boxing After Dark. The PPV will feature four fights and will cost $44.95 in SD and $54.95 in HD.

Here is the card for the April 22 PPV:

WBO Featherweight Title
Oscar Valdez vs. Miguel Marriaga

WBO Super Middleweight Title
Gilberto Ramirez vs. Max Bursak

WBO Super Bantamweight Title
Jessie Magdaleno vs. Adelison Dos Santos

Debut of Shakur Stevenson
