Floyd Mayweather Jr. may have to remove the “Money” part of his nickname if a lawsuit filed by a Las Vegas Jewelry company ends up having merit.
Mayweather is accused of allegedly owing The Jewelers, Inc. $1.4 million for a diamond-encrusted necklace he picked up just days after his final fight against Andre Berto in September of 2015, according to a lawsuit filed in Nevada state court, the Associated Press reported.
It’s not known if Mayweather or his reps were served with the civil lawsuit, which was filed on Sept. 23 in Clark County District Court in Las Vegas, according to the AP. Mayweather confidante Leonard Ellerbe and attorney Mark Tratos both didn’t respond to messages for comment.
The jewelry company indicated in court documents that Mayweather shelled out $1 million for the $3 million necklace, which was made up of 72 round-cut diamonds in September of 2015. He made six payments of $100,000, but the lawsuit says he stopped imbursements in May and that he is in breach of agreement and unjust enrichment, according to the AP.
Mayweather (49-0, 26 knockouts) can certainly afford the price of the necklace. He was Forbes highest-paid athlete for 2015 with earnings of around $300 million. He also headed the same list in 2014 and 2012.
The AP said the lawsuit is the second in 11 years for Mayweather concerning not making payments for jewelry. “Records show that a 2005 civil action filed by another jeweler alleging that he failed to pay $124,000 for more than 20 pieces of jewelry was settled in 2006,” the AP said. “The terms were not disclosed.”
