Khan defeats Algieri; Fortuna wins title over Vasquez
Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) won a unanimous 12 round decision over Chris Algieri (20-2, 8 KOs) on Friday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. Algieri took the fight to Khan and was the aggressor all night. The problem was that he seemed to be chasing Khan around instead of cutting off the ring. When he had chances to throw punches, he rarely threw combinations, instead it was one and done for Algieri.
I have to give it to Algieri, I thought he was going to get run over here. While the scores were fairly wide, the fight was actually very competitive. The scores were 115-113, 117-111 on two cards. Amir Khan is now keeping his fingers crossed for a September date with Floyd Mayweather. In my opinion, no way Khan wins that fight. Algieri was able to give him all kinds of fits, who could have imagined Mayweather in there tonight.
Javier Fortuna had an easier than expected time against Bryan Vasquez (34-2, 18 KO's) to earn a unanimous decision win in the co-main event. Fortuna (28-0-1, 20 KO’s) landed big shots throughout the fight and hurt Vasquez. Vasquez was not busy enough to win rounds in this fight and it showed on the scorecards. The scores were 116-112, 117-111 twice for Javier Fortuna. Fortuna is now the WBA "regular" Junior Lightweight Champion.
