Former world champion boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. received an early Christmas present from his friends in Russia – a tiger cub.
Mayweather held a training session in Moscow last week and was warmly received by a local chapter of "The Money Team," who gifted him with the cub.
"I want to thank my family The Money Team Russia here in Moscow for the hospitality and my early Christmas present, a rare and exotic tiger from India," Mayweather said in an Instagram post.
The retired boxer said he was accepting suggestions as to the name of the two-month old female tiger cub.
The "gift," however, drew the attention of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), who said in an article that tigers are not made to be pets.
"Mayweather can have anything he wants, and what he should want is an end to the wild animal trade, not to be a facilitator of it," PETA said. "Tigers do poorly as 'pets' – they belong in their native habitants, not in a cage in a celebrity's home."
"Wild animals kept as amusements never have a fighting chance at a natural life… PETA appeals to Floyd Mayweather to be a real life and allow his 'Christmas present' to be moved to a wildlife sanctuary," it added.
