Cruiserweights. That's not a typo, they were cruiserweight involved in the fight of the year!! This fight was full of drama and could very well have ended in the sixth round.
Krzysztof Glowacki upset the reigning WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck via knockout in the eleventh round at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Marco Huck was chasing history in this fight by trying to break the record for most consecutive cruiserweight title defenses in boxing history, which was 14. Glowacki wasn't having it. The largely pro-Polish crowd, rallied their fighter with every round!
The fight was completely back and forth with Glowacki taking some early rounds, but Huck taking over with a vengeance during the middle of the fight. Round 5 was a big one for Huck who seemed to have settled into a rhythm and started landing really hard shots. The sixth round also belonged to Huck. Marco Huck landed a sweeping hard left hook to the side of Glowacki's head that he didn't see coming and he just dropped to the canvas. He beat the count but was staggering to the ropes. Referee took a long look, but decided to let the fight go on. Glowacki immediately became the aggressor and was able to get out of the round. Truth be told, this fight could have been stopped right there. It was a good decision from the referee to let the fight go on, but you couldn't have blamed him if he decided to stop it.
“I didn’t know where I was,” Glowacki would state later on.
The one thing that was really noticeable in this fight is that the fighters wanted to fight. They continued to fight after the bell in rounds three and four. They really wanted to go at one another.
“The U.S. market is now open to me,” Glowacki said in the ring after the fight ended. “Fans around the world will now have to respect the cruiserweight division.”
Huck was controlling the action toward the later rounds. Glowacki still landing meaningful shots, but not winning the rounds. In the eleventh round, Glowacki came out firing and landed some hard shots. Huck threw a lazy combination and Glowacki countered with a left and wide right straight to the face that dropped Huck cold. Huck beat the count and was clearly hurt. Referee allowed him to continue and Glowacki threw a barrage of punches and Huck crumpled against the ropes again and the fight was stopped at 2:39 of round 11.
“When there was one minute left in the eleventh I knew I had to come on strong,” said Glowacki. “I always had a thing against bullies. Huck was trying to bully me in the ring and I brought it to him. This is the biggest night of my life.”
Huck was ahead on all cards going into round 11: Huck was ahead 96-93, 96-93 and 95-94, Ringside Reporter had Huck leading 96-93 at the time of the stoppage.
