Robert Guerrero, (33-3-1, 18 KOs), was knocked down and almost out, but came back and somehow won a split decision over Aron Martinez, (19-4-1, 4 KOs).
Martinez seemed to be in control from the opening bell. What was surprising about Martinez is that he only had 4 knockouts coming into the fight, but he kept fighting on the inside and seemed to have plenty of power because he definitely had his way with Guerrero for a lot of this fight. He had a size advantage and seemed to be stronger than Guerrero. At the end of the fourth round, Martinez put together a beautiful combination that had Guerrero out before he hit the canvas. Somehow Guerrero got up and was able to finish the fight - and do so competitively.
After the knockdown, Guerrero started to box, rather than slug, and did much better. Even though he did better in the later rounds, the fight was just extremely close. Ringside Reporter had the fight scored 95-94 for Martinez. Judges had it 95-94 - one for Martinez, the other for Guerrero. The third judge had the perplexing score of 97-92 for Guerrero.
Guerrero won the fight, but definitely did not look like the fighter he has been in the past. His best days may be very well behind him.
2012 U.S. Olympian Dominic Breazeale, (14-0, 13 KOs), knocked down Yasmany Consuegra, (17-1, 14 KOs), three times in the third round to win his 14th fight in a row. One can't help but think if Consuegra had a chin, he may have beaten Breazeale, who was getting hit at will. It was almost as if he had never learned how to slip a punch. Breazeale better get himself a new trainer in a hurry or he isn't going anywhere in the heavyweight division. He should also get a nutritionist, as he came in quite flabby.
Former world champion Alfredo Angulo (23-5, 19 KOs) scored a fifth round KO over Delray Raines (20-11-1, 14 KOs) in a middleweight fight. Angulo actually missed weight for the fight. Angulo dropped Raines in the fourth round twice to finish him off. Time was 2:16.
WBA featherweight champion Jesus Cuellar (27-1, 21 KOs) retained his title with a TKO in the 8th round over Vic Darchinyan (40-8-1, 29 KOs). Darchinyan’s corner threw in the towel after he was knocked down with a huge right hook. Time was 1:04. The fight was very competitive, but you could see Cuellar taking control as the bout went on.
On a side note, the fight didn't seem to be very well attended. The stands on TV looked about half full.
