Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) and James Kirkland (32-2, 28 KOs) put on a PPV worthy performance tonight. This was a war from the first round. Neither fighter stopped punching and these two went at it for 3 hard rounds.
James Kirkland came out firing in the first round, backing Canelo into the corner and just winging power shots for the first minute and a half. Canelo then caught him with a big shot and Kirkland went down. He was extremely lucky to get out of the round because Alvarez was really teeing off on him.
The second round saw Kirkland, for the most part, coming forward and trying to land shots on Canelo. Both fighters were landing big punches. Canelo landed some big shots toward the end of the round.
Kirkland was the aggressor in the third round until he ran into a perfectly timed uppercut that dropped Kirkland cold. Kirkland got up, but was clearly hurt. Canelo put Kirkland on the ropes and dropped a huge right hand to the head. Kirkland actually spun around and fell to the floor. It looked like a Playstation knockout. He was out before he hit the floor and the referee stopped the fight as soon as he hit the canvas.
This was an all out war for three rounds and much better than that garbage we saw last week. Other fighters take note - when you sell out a stadium or charge $100 for PPV, this is the kind of fight people expect.
