Golden Boy Promotions highly touted lightweight prospect Christian "Chimpa" Gonzalez (16-0,14KO's) fought relatively unknown (at least in America) Romero "Sandman" Duno (12-1,11KO's) from Gen. Santos City, Philipines last night on Unimas televised L.A Fight Club and the crowd that was there in support of "Chimpa" got shocked as Romero Duno dropped
Gonzalez with a huge right hand that probably could have ended the fight. But since that right came with under 10 seconds left in the first round referee Thomas Taylor, after giving Gonzalez the step left, step right, which I guess is boxing's trendy new sobriety test, let the fight continue and Gonzalez went back to his corner not knowing where he was. As soon as he got back to his corner the doctor rushed in to check on him and apparently decided Gonzalez was ok enough to continue. I wasn't a long continuance though, as Gonzalez came back out on shaky legs to start the second round and went right after Duno and had his back to the ropes when Duno landed a devastating right hook that dropped Gonzalez. Gonzalez got up around the count of nine but the referee seen he had had enough and waved the fight off as Gonzalez crashed back down flat on the canvas and remained there until eventually being carried away on a stretcher.
So, is this the beginning of a new and exciting Filipino power puncher or was Gonzalez just hype?
