Mexican ring legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. has been sometimes critical and sometimes supportive of current boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez. Yesterday during his ESPN Deportes TV show “A Los Golpes,” Chavez was both when he discussed the Canelo-GGG situation.
“If the fighter wants to fight someone, the fight gets made,” stated Chavez. “For example, when I was offered the Camacho fight, I took it. When they offered me the Haugen fight, I took it. And the Meldrick Taylor fight, and the Whitaker fight, I took them. Don King sometimes didn’t want the fights, but I told him that I wanted to fight them and the fights got made.
“I don’t think Canelo is afraid and I also think that Canelo has more than a good chance to beat Golovkin. Canelo keeps getting better. To me, Canelo is a natural middleweight. Canelo is a much better boxer than Golovkin, but Golovkin is a bigger puncher than Canelo. Honestly, I think Canelo has the skills to make a good fight and he can beat Golovkin.”
[On former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.] “My son is the one who should give the news on who is he going to fight next. It looks like he is going to fight Gabriel Rosado, but I would prefer that Julio gives you the correct answer. I’m very happy that he is back on the right path and if he continues doing what is right, he’ll be world champion again.”
Mexican journalist David Faitelson asked Chavez if he is the one who advised Junior to get back together with trainer Freddie Roach and Chavez Sr. confirmed that he did. “Yes, I was the one who talked to Julio Junior and we agreed that he was at his best when he was with Roach, and when my son got away from Freddie his career went to a low,” concluded Chavez.
