Kell Brook recovering from eye surgery

Kell Brook had surgery last Friday to repair a broken orbital bone around his right eye, suffered in a fifth-round knockout loss to unified middleweight titleholder Gennady Golovkin on Sept. 10.

"All went well and he's resting up," Anthony Leaver, spokesman for Brook promoter Matchroom Boxing, told ESPN.com on Wednesday.

The surgery took place in Brook's hometown of Sheffield, England.

Brook (36-1, 25 KOs), a welterweight world titleholder, moved up two weight divisions to challenge the formidable Golovkin at the sold-out O2 Arena in London. The fight was action-packed and Brook had his moments, but Golovkin's power was the big difference. He broke Brook's orbital bone early in the fight, and when Golovkin was hammering Brook in the fifth round, trainer Dominic Ingle stepped up onto the ring apron and threw in the towel.

Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) retained his title for the 17th time and scored his 23rd knockout in a row. He is now in talks to face secondary titleholder and mandatory challenger Daniel Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) on Dec. 10 in New York.

Brook will be out of action until next year but is expected back at full strength, although he likely will vacate his welterweight title and settle in at junior middleweight.

"He looked worse after the fight than he did after the operation," Ingle told the Sheffield Star. "The surgeon, who was called Mohammed Ali, believe it or not, went up through his gums, his front teeth, moved an eye to one side and then sorted out the fracture. Kell is good, though, and doesn't want any delays before his next fight. He wants to be out again early in the new year, rather than later."
