Tony Bellew (28-2-1, 18 KOs) beat Ilunga Makabu (19-2, 18 KOs) to win the vacant WBC cruiserweight title on Sunday in front of a massive audience in Goodison Park Stadium in England.
Bellew took control in round one by pounding Makabu on the ropes, but then he got careless and got caught with a straight left and went down. Bellew seemed to be a little gun shy the next round, but opened up in round three. He rocked Makabu and then unleashed a huge flurry and finished the fight. Referee Victory Laughlin stepped in to wave it off as Makabu crashed to the canvas. The time was 1:20 in the third round.
WBC #1, IBF #5, WBA #6, WBO #7 super middleweight Callum “Mundo” Smith (20-0, 15 KOs) won a hard fought decision over Cesar Hernan Reynoso (14-8-3, 7 KOs). Reynoso was down once in rounds one, four and five. The fight was waived off in round six. Reynoso was game and gave it a go, but came up short.
