The WBA's super champion at middleweight, Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin, is still involved in negotiations for a potential fight with Saul 'Canelo' Avarez. If those discussions fall through, then Golovkin's team will target a unification with WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders.
The WBA's regular champion, Daniel Jacobs, is looking at a rematch of last August's defense against Sergio Mora.
Jacobs and Mora fought last August in a rapid-fire two round contest. Both fighters went down in the first round and continued to trade punches in the second. Mora went down again in the second, but injured his right ankle and was unable to continue.
Jacobs (31-1, 28KOs) returned in December and stopped Peter Quillin in one round. Mora (28-4-2, 9KOs) had to undergo several months of rehab and has yet to fight again. Jacobs is likely going to return to the ring on July 30th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, as part of the Leo Santa Cruz vs. Carl Frampton undercard on Showtime.
Once the two champions have their interim-bouts, the WBA is going to order Golovkin and Jacobs to face each other to establish a single middleweight champion in their organization.
"I called the team of Daniel Jacobs and they told me they want to make a fight with Sergio Mora," Mendoza told ESPN Deportes.
