Juanma arrested and charged with domestic violence

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Police in Puerto Rico have charged boxer Juan Manuel Lopez Rivera with domestic violence.

Authorities said the 32-year-old boxer known as "Juanma" Lopez turned himself in on Sunday after an arrest warrant was issued over the weekend. He was released on a $50,000 bond and instructed to wear an ankle monitor until his upcoming court hearing.

Police said the former WBO featherweight champion is accused of hitting his wife in the face on Saturday. Officials said she was taken to the hospital and treated for her injuries.

Defense attorney Rafael Borras said his client is not guilty.

"He denies that the events occurred in the way the alleged victim is claiming," Borras said.

Lopez is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 11 for a hearing following his wife's request for a restraining order. He also faces a Nov. 16 probable cause hearing regarding his case. If the judge finds probable cause, Lopez will appear once again to enter a plea, Borras said.

The southpaw (34-5, 31 KOs) is training for his return to boxing, Borras said.
