Middleweight Kingpin Gennady Golovkin has reportedly begun training to make the 154 pound limit, just in case Floyd Mayweather decides to fight him for a September bout. Golovkin's trainer, Abel Sanchez, stated to WBN that he could make the weight safely if he's been given enough time to prepare.
There has to be something here - as a fighter, you don't just start training to drop down a weight division, especially when you've been a middleweight your entire career.
For GGG to take this type of measure, especially with no opponent named for his next fight, there has to at least be some talk of a fight with Floyd. Mayweather has been steadfast in telling anyone who will listen that his next opponent will be either Karim Mayfield or Andre Berto. Most insiders (along with anyone else) think this is just banter. Absolutely no one believes he will fight either one of those two.
So, who's left? Amir Khan? Khan looked awful in his last outing and quite a few people think he lost the fight against Chris Algieri. Golovkin's name has been gaining steam when talking about Mayweather's next opponent.
Given the new information - I don't think it's that the fight is that far fetched anymore. Floyd Mayweather holds the WBA/WBC titles at 154 pounds. Don't be surprised if this fight happens now.
