The Semifinals of the Boxcino Tournament took place tonight on ESPN Friday Night Fights. There were four fights on the card and they were all really competitive and good fights.
Heavyweights
Andrey Fedosov KO
3 over Lenroy Thomas
Thomas came out with a great jab and floored Fedosov with a
good combination. It was a
big first round for Thomas. The
second round, Thomas wasn’t as active with the jab and Fedosov seemed to put a
lot more pressure on him this round.
Thomas completely abandoned the jab in the third round and Fedosov came
in with some big body shots.
Thomas took a knee and just let the ref count to 10 and that was
it. It came to an end in the third
round. Fedosov winner by KO.
Donovan Dennis KO
2 over Razvan Cojanu
Cojanu looks a lot bigger than Dennis in this fight. Big size difference. Very uneventful first round, but less
than a minute into the second round a huge overhand left landed right on the
jaw of Cojanu and it was all she wrote.
Huge knockout! You knew as
soon as Cojanu hit the deck, he wasn’t getting back up. Donovan
Dennis picks up a 2nd round knockout.
John Thompson SD 8
over Stanislav Skorokhod
Skorokhod had problems with Thompson’s hand speed early
on. I had Thompson winning the
first round by a slim margin.
Skorokhod pressed forward, but did not have an answer for the hand speed
of Thompson. Skorokhod was largely
outboxed again in the second, but landed some good right hands and had Thompson
a little wobbly in the second. In
the third round, Thompson started using his jab more and controlling the
distance. Skorokhod continued to
get more and more frustrated. Some
swelling under the right eye of Skorokhod between rounds. Corner has it well under control
thus far. Skorokhod’s pressure
started to wear on Thompson toward the later portion of the fight. Thompson had a really good round 7 and
appeared to buckle Skorokhod with a counter shot. This is an extremely close fight. Thompson really boxing well in the final round, very
elusive. Skorokhod looks
incredibly frustrated. I gave
Thompson the final round and we may very well have a draw. The
judges scored the fight 77-75 Thompson, 78-74 Skorokhod, 78-74 Thompson –
Thompson wins via split decision.
This was a big upset as most people had Skorokhod advancing.
Brandon Adams TKO
7 over Vito Gasparyan
Adams definitely going to have to rely on skill here, Gasparyan definitely looks bigger and
stronger. Adams relied on angles
and combinations to keep the fight under control. Gasparyan didn’t come here to lay down – he was very game. In the third round, Adams started doing
some really good body work and was by far the more active fighter – throwing
and landing more shots. Adams was
just busier, staying inside and throwing combinations to the head and
body. Gasparyan putting in shots
of his own, but Adams, doing more damage and much busier. The end came in the 7th
round in a bizarre fashion as Gasparyan appeared to quit because of a swollen
ear. It looked like a cauliflower
ear that continued to swell throughout the fight. Gasparyan must have been in a lot of pain to have the fight stopped.
Adams was the winner by TKO in 7.
